Stories & Memories of Donald Bowling

Everyone’s Daddy
Daddy was everyone’s Daddy. Fun bubbly and always called me Baby Doll. I remember one day Donna told me he wasn’t having a good day. I called him up he didn’t know my number. He let it go to voicemail but once he heard my little voice he called me right back. We talked and talked and talked. I said I can’t have you not having a good. We laughed for a good minute he told some stories and I laughed so hard. I enjoyed his stories and things that he liked or even disliked. He has a way with words. He’s the greatest story teller. I especially enjoyed his pieces on Black History and you were going to hear it one way or the other. I’m just going to say See you later Daddy cause you are not in my past but you are in my future. I pray that we have many more of our young me grow up to have the care and concern for each of us as Daddy has done. We need more Donald Bowling’s in this world. Way to go Daddy. Keep a watch over us. (Me) sometimes we tend to get out of hand.

Wow! Don’t know what to say! I met Donald Bowling back in 2016 in Rocky Mount, NC in ministry. I had ministered in mime there and later on at his church and I promise you he had become my biggest encourager and supporter ever! He became my Uncle Donnie! He has always kept me encouraged! My heart is saddened but I know you are with the Father! See ya later Uncle D! Love you Praying for his beautiful wife, children, family and church family!

Commitment To Family
Today, we say goodbye to Donald Bowling, lovingly known to many of us as “Uncle Donnie,” even if that wasn’t quite his official title. He was my mother’s first cousin, but he graciously let me call him “uncle”—and every time he’d just shake his head and say, “Alright, I’ll allow it!” That was Uncle Donnie: full of humor, warmth, and understanding.
Uncle Donnie was a true leader in our family. Whenever he spoke, everyone paused to listen. His voice carried a sense of calm and wisdom, and his words held weight. At Thanksgiving, I remember looking up in awe as he walked into the room, so tall and stately. He had this way of making an entrance—impossible to miss, a little bit intimidating, and yet totally comforting at the same time. He was a giant in every sense, but always gentle with us.
One of Uncle Donnie’s greatest legacies was his commitment to family and togetherness. He was the kind of person who always made sure everyone was doing alright, checking in, gathering us all for family reunion's, or just a quick laugh. In his eyes, family came first, and he taught us all the value of that connection.
I wanted to share this photo to capture him in the light I always saw him in: a guiding force, & leader not only in his community but within our family. Uncle Donnie, you will be dearly missed.

Sunday Dinners
My favorite memories of Pop were Sunday dinners at the Porters house, eating and playing Spades. I can still hear the crack of his knuckles hitting the table when he smacked that trump card down!

Update #2
Donnie came home four weeks ago. He is currently unable to sit up and spends his days in bed. Thankfully, he is eating a little more than he did while he was receiving care in the rehabilitation facility. He enjoys receiving visitors! Wound care is administered by a visiting nurse on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Home health is providing a physical therapist twice per week and home health aides seven days a week. Family volunteers are assisting and are a welcomed blessing. It’s costing an average of $1500 a week just for his care and that does not nclude supplies. Long term care only reimburses $110 a day. We appreciate all of the financial support, encouragement and prayers. Our God has been and is faithful!

Update #1
Update!
He’s home! Overall he’s doing well. For sure we have seen an increase in his appetite. . We have Always Best Care coming every day for several hours and family/volunteers in between. The schedule is still a work in progress. He's enjoying telling each new caregiver his life story. They’re a captive audience hearing about every police story, his time with Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Senior and so much more. He has OT, PT, wound care nurse and an aide who comes each week. We're also assigned a social worker that we haven't met yet. We’re now working on transport to get him to and from doctor’s appointments. So far the lowest rate is $150 round trip. There’s so much that goes into home health care. It's a lot but we're all working hard to do what’s necessary.
We appreciate your support and prayers!
